where is da hate?

do people even know how to be negative anymore? web 2.0 is a sycophant's paradise. everyone's too busy jumping on whatever might be the next now to even consider whether that which they're obsessed with is any good.
either that or the ease of communication these days means people are too afraid to say what they mean, lest they get an angry email.
or maybe everything's way better than i think it is, and i'm just pissy coz i've got blocked ears and a headache.
ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

cutoffs

this is a review of nevernudes' first ep. i wrote it for critic. critic is the otago university magazine. bla bla bla.

Named (brilliantly) for an Arrested Development reference and boasting a song about the boredom of high school which I’m pretty sure takes it’s title from The Simpsons, Auckland’s Nevernudes are about as teenage as it comes. Thankfully, in a time where people cream their jeans over anything even slightly interesting made by under-20s, their debut EP contains more than enough to suggest that this is a band to watch.

Recorded and produced by ex-Mint Chick, (and now, as f in math, a solo performer of some note) Michael Logie, the EP wastes little time. Beginning with a new recording of their fantastic “Grade F Meat” and moving quickly through three more pop-punk gems, it clocks in at a little under eight minutes. The songs use roughly the same ingredients throughout, all off-kilter At the Drive In-via-Polysics guitars and Betchadupa (!!!) vocal harmonies, but (as should really be expected from such a brief package) the band manage to avoid sounding samey.

Crop Circles brings the angular discordance, Socialite, probably the weakest of this quadriptych, still stays interesting via some great lyrical nonchalance from co-frontman Joe Trotman, before the album reaches it’s apex with mega power-pop closer George’s Spiders.

Nevernudes’ First EP is by no means a perfect collection of songs. I’m not a huge fan of the half speed choruses the band often falls back on, and it occasionally feels like there's just a little too much happening all at once, but as far as introductions go, this one is more than pleasant.

Nevernudes’ First EP can be downloaded for FREE, and in TOTALLY HIGH QUALITY, from nevernudesrule.bandcamp.com. Get on it. Highly recommended.

keep your dreams

unrelated to us, or anything we're doing, i heard a really good song today. it's by crude, the performance moniker of dunedin's brilliant matt middleton (see also: the aesthetics, the first incarnation of dimmer, wu, heaps of other shit that i probably just don't know about), and it's easily the dreamiest, poppiest song i've heard from him.

it's called yer dreams, and you can hear it, along with a number of other tracks, at http://www.myspace.com/crude2009

matt's amazing, and has been really supportive of us. you should be supportive of him.

thnx

xo

edit:this song's like 3 years old lolololol PEACE
